Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for this year's Hoop Camp. If you have any questions please call our director Steve Garrity at (503)875-8281. Our camp is a “unified” camp which means even though most of our campers have special needs some of our campers do not have special needs. Our main focus and emphasis of our camp is simply a basketball camp for children and adults of all ages in our community with special needs. Our athletes all have a variety of abilities and it is important we adjust drills, games and contests based on individual ability so all campers enjoy success. Make sure you modify our drills contests and games accordingly. Most of our participants range in age from 6-50 years of age.

Hoop Camp is held at the THPRD athletic facility located on 158th between Cornell road and Walker road in Beaverton.

Our athletes will start checking in at 8:30 am each day it is preferred that you show up each day at 8:30am to assist with check-ins, and to connect with the players and receive daily instruction on the activities and schedule for the day. As coaches and counselors you will be helping and leading drills, coaching a team, refereeing, score keeping, helping with set up each day and take down each day, and general camp duties. The morning of camp is dedicated to fundamental drills and contests like Free Throws, Hot Shot Shooting, Dribbling, Ball Handling, Passing, Lay-ups, etc. We will divide into teams of 8-10 players and will need 3 of 4 coaches with each team. We prefer that you plan on staying until 2:30pm to help with camper checkout and to make sure things are cleaned up. In general all volunteers need to be 16 years of age. Most volunteers will be assigned to a team, you need to be aware of where all your players are at all times. Safety is our number one concern. Our emphasis is not on competition rather fun for everyone. Be positive at all times and make sure you contact one of the camp directors immediately if someone is hurt or needs any assistance. Bring you basketball attire, lots and lots of energy and be ready for a great day. Drinks and lunches are provided for all volunteers. Thank you for volunteering at Hoop Camp!

Safety

Remember above all safety is our first concern. Make sure, if needed those outside have on sun screen and that frequent water breaks are given as needed. Some athletes may take medication at lunch and we will have that for them. Watches and rings need to be removed. Know where all the players of your team are at all times. We have athletes of all ages and sizes make sure that equal ability and sizes are guarding each other. Those that ref make sure you are calling a loud and a quick whistle to eliminate any play that is too aggressive. Make sure that physical contact between all players, campers and volunteers are appropriate. Outwardly displays of affection is not appropriate at camp such as hand holding, kissing, prolonged hugging etc. In most cases as for encouragement high fives are enough with a pat on the back. Some athletes may be old enough to be dating however while at camp intimate affection is like hugging or kissing is not allowed. Volunteers and coaches need to follow the same rules of engagement. There are first aid kids and ice available with many that are first aid trained. There is a special procedure to follow with any bodily fluids or blood contact a THPRD staff member or Steve Garrity the camp director immediately if you have any safety concerns.
